Summary: After hearing just how Peter would like to punish him for some shenanigans, Neal decides to take on a new role at the Burke residence. OT3 Elizabeth/Peter/Neal; consensual adult discipline.

~oOo~

I woke up to the sound of Peter telling Elizabeth exactly what he thought I deserved. Which, to my surprise, wasn't a trip back to prison.

I was on the Burkes' couch, tucked under a mountain of warm blankets. I remember furrowing my brow, trying to figure out why I had fallen asleep in their living room and why Peter was in the kitchen telling his wife how badly he wanted to put me over his knee.

Summary: I swiveled in my chair to face him—but stopped cold as I recognized the fellow. Of course I recognized him. How could I forget him? I had given my greatest performance, to date, in his rooms at Baker Street.

Part One: Jonathan Daniels

“Come in,” I called out, answering the knock on the door that led to my cramped dressing room. Not that I was complaining about the tight quarters, mind. The room was a luxury for this little theatre—and at least my portrayal of the ruthless and cunning Prince Hal rated some privacy.

A tall man with a keen pair of grey eyes stepped inside. I stared at him through my mirror as I removed the last of that ghastly rouge I wear on stage. He wasn't a member of our company. Had he sought me out to compliment my performance?

Neal woke up to a wet tongue licking his face. He smiled, but then made a face at the dog breath that accompanied the tongue. “Morning, Satch.”

He pet the dog for a few minutes and scratched behind his ears. But then he sat up and furrowed his brow, trying to figure out how best to handle Peter for the day.

~oOo~

Picard stared down at the corpse of the young ensign. He was laid out in sick bay, soon to be prepared for burial. He looked strangely alive lying there, as if he would awake at any moment. But that was an illusion, Picard thought bitterly. In truth, the lad was dead--and he was dead for no good reason.

The boy had not given his life in battle; he’d had no opportunity for such heroics. Instead, he’d been killed by an aneurysm that Dr. Crusher could not even account for. A freak occurrence, it seemed.

“Upsetting, isn’t it, mon capitaine?”

Peter yawned as he walked out of the elevator onto his floor. He almost wished he could turn around now and head back to Brooklyn—and his bed. He had to stop staying up to watch extra innings.

“Morning, Peter.”

He blinked. Neal was already at his desk. “Morning, Neal. Come on up with me,” he added nodding at his office. “We’ve got a new mortgage case to work on.”

Neal groaned as he stood up and then fell in step beside him.

McCoy cautiously opened one eye, groaning a little from the effort. His vision was surprisingly steady, however, considering his hangover, so he opened the other eye as well. That earned him a decent view of the wall he was facing. So far so good—he might even be able to ease himself to a sitting position.

Bones leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest. "Damn it Jim, I'm not asking Spock to find G-d."

Kirk grinned, trying to imagine Bones in a relationship with anyone who had, ah, found G-d. "I think it'd be inconvenient for you if he did—you're too comfortable as an agnostic."

"Exactly," he agreed, smiling a little.

Summary: Peter begins the evening staking out Neal Caffrey--and ends it with a drunken suspect on his hands.

~oOo~

Peter Burke didn’t often smile on a stake out. Especially a pointless stake out like this one. Neal Caffrey was too damn clever a suspect to reveal anything. Still, Peter had to cover all his bases, even knowing the best he could hope for was a glimpse of some compatriot apart from the girlfriend.

So he frowned as he watched the entrance to Caffrey’s new place. The kid had rented himself a second floor apartment in a half-way decent section of Queens. Well, better staking him out here than in San Diego; at least Peter was closer to home.

He hadn’t bothered to hide the stake out from Caffrey--he had too much respect for his intelligence--so he wasn’t surprised when Caffrey gave him a playful salute as he walked out of his apartment toward the convenience store down the block. In fact, the salute even drew a small smile from him. Had to give the kid points for his audacity.

Peter beckoned to Neal and watched the ex-con glide into his office. He leaned forward on his desk as Neal folded himself into the chair opposite him with a casual and enviable grace.

Peter shook his head just a little and then went straight to business. “I made an appointment for you,” he began, sliding a folder across the desk. “The test is next month, but we can change the date if you want more time to brush up.”

Neal blinked at the folder, but didn’t lay a finger on it. “Test? Since when does the Bureau have me testing?”

“Since we found out that you didn’t complete high school.”

The barkeep eyed the youngest Cartwright wearily. “Don’t you think you’ve had enough, Little Joe?”

“I still got money in my pocket, Clem,” he answered in a drunken slur. “Enough for one more drink and one more girl—pour me `nother.”

Clem doubted that Joe could handle either a drink or a girl at the moment, but he complied anyway. Just as he set the drink on the bar Adam Cartwright strode into the saloon. Clem breathed a sigh of relief and sent him a pleading glance.

Holmes was resting in his bed. His heartbeat had returned to something approaching normal and his eyes, at a guess, were less bloodshot. It was difficult to tell, as he was keeping them resolutely shut.

“I am quite recovered, Watson,” he murmured, turning his head to the side as he sunk further into the pillows that I had propped up behind him. “Allow me to sleep—there’s a good fellow.”

~oOo~

Neal had to tread carefully; Peter looked like he was about to bolt.

Peter usually made himself at home in Neal's rooms. He'd barge in with a six pack and a bottle of wine. Then he'd kick back and try to convince Neal to watch a game with him.

Not tonight. Neal had all but dragged him here--and the agent still looked like he'd rather be sentenced to an eternity without baseball than remain a moment longer. Worse, he was pacing the floor and wringing his hands.

Neal rolled his eyes as he walked over to his fridge and pulled out a beer for his friend. "Peter, calm down. This will be simple. I'm just going to give you some pointers."

“So how do you like Peter as a Dad?” El asked, clinking her beer bottle against Neal’s.

Neal grinned. “You’re not upset about that, are you?”

She laughed as she unscrewed the cap. They were sitting out on the front steps, enjoying the sunshine and all the commotion of the block party. Everything seemed perfect. Or almost perfect. She had this feeling in the back of her brain that Neal wasn't quite ok.

“What?” she asked, keeping her voice light and teasing. “Upset that you conned our whole block into thinking that Peter got some poor girl pregnant when he was a teenager?”

“In fairness I only conned your next door neighbor, Mrs. Murphy,” Neal corrected. “She did the rest.”
